By Danielle Wirsansky on January 18, 2017

There is so much to do as a college student. You have homework, classes to attend, your daily work — but we all have to carve out time for a social life. After all, most of us are only a college student once, right? After that, poof! The time is gone and you do not want to miss out on some experiences that are different when you are a student.

When you go to your university’s event as a student, the experience becomes more special and memorable. Sure you might be able to attend even after you graduate but the experience is different. Make those memories while you can and make them last. Read on to learn about the types of shows and events you should go to as a college student.

Football Games

As we all know, football is America’s most popular sport. Now it is not everyone’s favorite sport, but most colleges are deeply involved in the football culture. If you go to a school with a football team, you have a team to root for whether you really care about the sport or not. At that point, it does not matter about football — what matters is your school spirit.

Your college team can define your college experience and identity. Do not miss out on being connected to all of your fellow students simply because you do not care for a sport. Go to the tailgates, watch the marching band go, wear the gear. Be a part of the hive mind that forms as you and all the other students cheer your school on.

Once you are a Nole, you are a Nole; a Dolphin, a Dolphin; a Panther, a Panther. You get it. Let yourself enjoy the once in a lifetime experience of being a part of a collective that is bigger than you, that encompasses your entire school.

Other Seasonal Sports

If football is not your cup of tea but you can palate other sports, then do it! People neglect many other college sports with so much focus put on football. But you can go and support your school and your classmates by attending basketball, baseball, rugby, tennis games, and more! Find the sport that calls to you because even though it might be on a smaller scale, you can still be a part of something bigger than yourself, celebrate your school spirit, and have a lot of fun.

Theater Performances

So say sports are not really your thing — or maybe they are — you can still enjoy theater! Most schools have a theater program as well and put on entire seasons of shows from classic works to those that are more daring and new. Generally, it is all student-acted and you can see just what the theater faculty can do from the direction to the technical aspects of the performance. It is a good way to celebrate your school and school spirit while staying inside with air conditioning. You get a lot of variety from dramas to comedies, musicals to plays.

There are not so many performances that you feel overwhelmed — usually, a show gets produced every month or two. And there are plenty of performance dates so if you get busy on one day, you have more than one chance to make it in to see the show. Student theater can often be very good, depending on the program, and as a student, you will most likely be able to get discounted tickets. So go see good theater and get cultured for a lower price than you would be able to see it anywhere else. Watch these theater students that could be the next TV or movie star to grace your screen. Support the arts!

Art Galleries

More than just supporting the arts through theater, you can also support your fellow art students! Attend exhibitions and see just what kind of art students create nowadays. Where is art going? What are the new innovations happening in the field? One example is 3D printing, a new technology being used for both art and science in both practical and life-changing ways. Interested? Go and support your fellow students and artists and check out what they are into. Never before has a visit to an art gallery and exposure to new thoughts, ideas, and mediums been so easy as when you are in college.

Universities often want their students well-rounded. They want you to go off into the world after graduation and see all the options in front of you and then achieve something with your degree. Participating in the events and performances that your college offers helps you be the best person you can while maintaining strong ties to your school.
